Sheriff Roy Dawson spent twenty years keeping the peace on a stretch of Route 66 that time forgot. But three weeks ago, he reopened a cold case file: the 1974 disappearance of teenage hitchhiker Maria Santos. He told his deputy he was close to an answer. Now Roy Dawson lies dead in the parking lot of Patty's Diner, three bullets in his chest and his case files missing. The diner's regulars saw nothing, heard nothing, know nothing. But in a town this small, everyone is connected. The mayor's son was the last person seen with Maria. The town banker's books don't add up. And Patty herself has been lying about that night for two decades. Someone in Coyote Springs committed murder twice, and they're not done protecting their secrets.
