January 1932. An Alpine Club expedition to the summit is forced back to Whiteridge Lodge at 8,500 feet when a blizzard rolls in and cuts off all contact with the outside world. Five guests, snowed in, no phone lines, no way out. On the second night, expedition coordinator Evelyn Blackwood is found dead at the base of the main staircase — neck broken, signs of a struggle on the upper landing. Evelyn managed the expedition finances, and the night before she died she wrote a letter to the expedition's wealthy patron naming the person who had embezzled $15,000 from the fund. The letter was never sent. Someone knew she was going to expose them in the morning, and the blizzard gave them the perfect cover. Shoe prints at the top of the stairs match only one person in the lodge.
