About this case
Chicago, New Year's Eve, 1955. The Sapphire Room is packed to the rafters for its midnight show, and the marquee name is Vivienne Laurent — a velvet-voiced jazz singer on the edge of national fame. She never takes the stage. Minutes before midnight, Vivienne is found in her dressing room, stabbed in the back with her own silver letter opener. The inscription reads: 'To my darling V — Forever yours, J.S.' The club was full of people with reasons to want her gone: her jealous backup singer whose spotlight she stole, the club owner she was about to expose for skimming the till, and an ex-fiancé who had been sending increasingly desperate letters for weeks. The dressing room door was unlocked for twenty minutes while the security guard slipped away. Someone walked in and made sure the new year would arrive without Vivienne Laurent in it.
Setting: Chicago Jazz Club, 1955
